Growth of Online Fundraising
Digital fundraising is a rapidly growing field with a nearly 50-fold increase of donations being raised online over the last decade. Technology-assisted developments within the non-profit sphere are unfolding at the same time that younger, tech-embracing donors are giving increasing amounts of donations online.
‣In the aftermath of the 2004-2005 Tsunami, it was estimated that 65% of US donations came via the internet, totalling over $230 million.
‣Barack Obama’s 2007-08 presidential campaign revolutionized digital fundraising techniques, integrating technology with field organizing that raised over $650 million
‣From 2007 to 2008, most major charities have experienced an increase in online fundraising
‣Keeping the ratio of fundraising costs to revenue low is important: email and internet fundraising is very cheap, and thus the break-even point is far lower. The Canadian Revenue Agency recently developed a fundraising costs policy that sets a goal of spending no more than .35 cents for every dollar raised.
Money is the ultimate enabler of global health. With Canada’s foreign aid priorities shifting and the devastating effects of the global financial crisis, non-profit health organizations are struggling for money.
Innovative strategies and new fundraising avenues are needed for many important global health projects.
This “Fundraising Online” website aims to help groups:
‣Develop online communications & fundraising strategies
‣Launch websites and new media tools easily
‣Attract & cultivate donors cheaply

How To Raise Money Online
This website will help global health non-profit groups and organizations raise money.
Fundraising is the process of soliciting and gathering money or other gifts in kind, by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, charitable foundations, or governmental agencies.
This meaningful engagement of supporters to give of time, talent and money relies on many factors, including:
‣Marketing Techniques: generating transparency, accountability and creating information feedback loops
‣Websites: while some IT knowledge & internet access is necessary, programs like WordPress and Blogger make website and blog development fairly easy, even for novices.
‣Email: e-newsletter communications with stakeholders can cultivate donors
‣Social Networking: reaching a broad range of potential donors is important, such as using Web 2.0 social networking innovations
‣Donors: every group needs to keep track of their supporters. Several free databases exist that can help segment your donor-list, keep track of donations and systematize a feedback loop.
‣Links: there is a lot of research, ‘how to’ guides, blogs and other sites that provide a wealth of fundraising techniques and ideas.
Charitable giving epitomizes the power of human connection, reinforced by personal stories that reflect the human capacity for caring.
